LumiLabis now preparing Performance Solution reports for luminance contrast issues on projects. We have expert knowledge of preparing these assessments and can consider an alternative pathway to compliance in some cases.

Alternatively, we can confirm if a design meets the prescriptive Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions.

What is a Performance Solution? A Performance Solution means “a method of complying with the Performance Requirements other than by a Deemed-to-Satisfy Solution.” This compliance method allows flexibility, creativity and innovation to achieve the same or equivalent outcome.

The luminance contrast requirements of the building codes and disability standards ensure that key items (such as signs, doors, handrails, tactile indicators, stair tread nosings etc.) in buildings, transport infrastructure or public spaces are easily identifiable.

In relation to luminance contrast, this might mean that some items could be identified differently from the prescriptive requirements.

Compliance can be achieved by following the minimum requirements in the access standards of AS 1428.1 and AS/NZS 1428.4.1. Each outlines what needs to comply, and to what level of luminance contrast (i.e. 30%, 45% or 60%). Or an alternative approach can be accepted (i.e. a doorway has a coloured band of less than 50mm, but has an increased luminance contrast of more than 30%).

LumiLab is an industry-leading accessibility firm specialising in compliance. We are the only company in Australia specialising in this field and using compliance testing apparatus and methodology.
